Google Maps will get offline turn-by-turn navigation and search this year

Googleio-offlinegooglemapsGoogle Maps is going to get even better for when you don't have an Internet connection.
The Google Maps app will be updated later this year with offline support for maps, turn-by-turn voice navigation, search and information about destinations like reviews, ratings and hours of operation...

Google vice president of engineering Jen Fitzpatrick made the announcement at the Google I/O conference on Thursday.
The push is part of an initiative to improve Google services and the Android user experience in emerging markets such as India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, where Internet service is often more scarce.
The update will allow users to pull up maps when they're in areas without any cellular connectivity or Wi-Fi. The ability to search for places, such as restaurants and stores, is especially useful if, say, you're on an airplane, where Wi-Fi may not be available.
Better offline Google Maps support will also mean less mobile data will be used, as all of the information will be stored locally within the app. But it wasn't clear how much data about the world Google Maps would store offline, or whether it would be limited to emerging markets or available everywhere.
Of course, you'll need to get online to get the most up-to-date maps. For example, a newly closed road won't show up on an outdated offline version of a map.
