“I took a modeling course in my hometown of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. It was sort of a scam,” said Evangelista, 48. “I was chosen (at 16) by a Japanese agency to go over to Japan for the summer to work. I got there, it was a catastrophe. They wanted me to take my clothes off and shoot me naked.”

Kate Moss still gives great face at 39.

Turlington’s start was less traumatic. “My mom would drive me downtown (in Miami) when I was 13 and we’d get lunch or frozen yogurt before my booking,” said the 44-year-old. “At 14, I met a scout from New York who was with Ford.”
By 16, the brunette beauty was living with agency co-founder Eileen Ford in her New York townhouse. “Eileen and Jerry Ford were probably the only agents that I had heard of before I started modeling, so I felt they were the best and I think my parents trusted the Ford brand.”
Daria Werbowy tells Interview that she is "still surprised" that people think she is good-looking.

Campbell, 43, dished about how it now feels to give advice to aspiring models on “The Face,” her reality show. “I do feel that I’m talking to someone who’s in a totally different place from where I was when I started modeling,” she said. “I was fortunate.”

Moss, 39, was “the first model where it was acceptable for any kid to put a picture up of (her) on their bedroom walls,” Interview said.

When Linda Evangelista was 16, she fell for a scam model agency, she tells Interview magazine, leading to an international incident when a Japanese company wanted her to take her clothes off for naked photos. She fled back to Canada.

Was she intimidated by Campbell, Evangelista and Turlington when she first got started? “Yeah,” Moss said, “but they were nice and I was quite street-wise. I still knew things. I even knew about some things they didn’t.”
Valletta, 39, told Interview she only got her big break at 18 because she decided to chop off her long locks. “Nobody had short hair at the time,” she said. “The waif thing hadn’t even started. I had two guys cutting my hair at the same time and then literally overnight everything changed.”

The sultry Seymour, 45, admitted that modeling brought out certain insecurities. “I always had difficulty as a model just being myself,” she said. “I can be very shy, and I used to have a lot of anxiety about working on a set.”
Werbowy, 29, also has a modest view of her beauty. “Sometimes, I am still surprised I am a model and that people think I am good-looking,” she said. “I’ve tortured myself about it.”
