Google and Motorola have officially unveiled the Moto X

Moto-x-handGoogle and Motorola have officially unveiled the Moto X, the company's newest flagship smartphone. The Moto X is the first smartphone designed under the...
auspices of both Google and Motorola.
Available for $199 (16GB) or $249 (32GB) with a contract, the Moto X will be available on all major U.S. carriers at either the end of August or early September, the company said at an event in New York City on Thursday. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and U.S. Cellular will selling the phone at their stores and at national retailers, including Best Buy. The phone will be available for purchase on all carriers, including T-Mobile, at motorola.com.
The Moto X sports a 4.7-inch 720p screen and has a dual-core processor, a quad-core GPU and 2GB of system RAM. It includes support for the 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and it supports Miracast (wireless HDMI) and NFC.
It has a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and a 10-megapixel rear camera. The rear camera uses Clear Pixel technology, which is supposed to capture 75% more light than a traditional RGP sensor. Motorola says that means it can take photos twice as fast in bright light, which means less motion blur.
The phone also has a specially designed custom battery that promises 31% additional capacity, while keeping the shape of the phone comfortable to hold.
The phone has Corning Gorilla Glass for the screen and the internals are have a water-repellent coating, which should make the phone safe to use in the rain.

Customizations Abound

Although the phone is available in either black or white, Motorola will also let users customize the look and back of their phone with the new MotoMaker. MotoMaker lets users choose from 18 different back colors, seven different accent colors and includes the option to engrave a custom message on the back.
Customers can configure their phone — and even select the wallpaper they want and assign it with their Google ID — and get it shipped to them in four days or less, using the Moto Maker online studio.
For now, Moto Maker is only available for AT&T customers, but Motorola says it wants to add other carriers to the program later in the year.
Users can also browse the various color options in person at participating AT&T stores. Users can choose to buy a white or black Moto X, or buy a card that will let them create a customized version at home.

Software Enhancements

The big news with the Moto X is that it takes advantage of some new hardware and software features. The first is hands-free voice control.
You can control the Moto X just by talking to it. Say, "OK Google Now," followed by a command — and the phone will automatically respond and perform your search query or action. That's because the Moto X has a special low-power mode that is "always on" and thus always available to listen once you start a sentence with "OK Google Now."
The Moto X also has a new active display that will let users see their notifications without having to wake their phone up. Think of this as a modern version of the famous BlackBerry LED. When you have a new notification, the phone will pulse quietly on the screen and you can then touch and hold the center to view a quick peek at your notifications.
The camera's Quick Capture mode can also be invoked by twisting your wrist twice. This will launch the camera app — even if the display is off.
Moto X buyers will also get an extra 50GB of Google Drive storage for two years — in addition to the 15GB free offered to all users.
