Rio Tinto posts first loss

Mining powerhouse Rio Tinto has reported a net loss of $US2.99 billion ($2.9 billion) - the first in its history - dragged down by well-flagged impairments against its aluminium and Mozambique coal assets.

After one-offs, Rio’s operating profit exceeded expectations, reporting underlying earnings of $US9.3 billion ($9 billion) in 2012, above the consensus of analyst estimates of $US9.1 billion.

We see the positive momentum in the fourth quarter of last year being sustained into 2013 with Chinese GDP growth returning to above 8 per cent.

 

Rio lifted its annual dividend to $US1.67 a share, up 15 per cent on the previous year, including a 94.5 cent final dividend, up from 91 cents a year earlier.

The miner said the 2012 underlying financial results, down significantly on the $US15.5 billion reported in 2011, reflected record iron ore production and shipments and a second half recovery in copper volumes.

Iron ore dominated the results delivering $US9.2 billion in net earnings, down from $US13.3 billion a year ago. Copper delivered $US1.1 billion in net earnings followed by energy ($US283 million), diamonds and other minerals ($119 million) and aluminium ($3 million).

One lead broking analyst speaking off the record said at first blush Rio's results were "a good set of numbers, across the board."

The higher dividend, he said, was "a nice surprise. It's good to see them returning cash. It's what the market wants".

Chinese growth above 8% tipped

Chairman Jan du Plessis said the increase in the dividend reflected the improvement in Rio's existing businesses.

In a statement, Rio chief executive Sam Walsh said his immediate priority was to "build more focus, discipline and accountability throughout the organisation".

“In 2012 we generated strong margins in copper, iron ore and minerals," Mr Walsh said. "But our aluminium and energy businesses faced a deterioration in market conditions coupled with rising costs which we are addressing through our cost saving and value enhancement programs.

“Looking ahead, we see the positive momentum in the fourth quarter of last year being sustained into 2013 with Chinese GDP growth returning to above 8 per cent in 2013," he said. "We expect market uncertainty and price volatility to persist as long as the structural issues in Europe and the United States remain unresolved.

Rio also announced the appointment of Andrew Harding as the new chief executive of its iron ore division. Mr Harding, a 21-year veteran at Rio, was previously head of copper.

His successor as copper chief executive is Jean-Sebastien Jacques, formerly president of Rio's international copper operations. Both men will join Rio's executive committee.

No mining tax paid

Mr Walsh commented on the mining tax, which so far has delivered just $126 million in its first two quarters, saying the MRRT was designed as a tax on super profits, not normal profits, and was "actually operating as it was physically designed" given commodity prices in 2012 were lower than 2011, and mining profits had dropped.

He said that Rio Tinto so far has not paid any MRRT.

Mr Walsh said there was "a feeling out there we're not paying our way in relation to tax".

"People need to understand Rio Tinto is one of the highest tax payers in Australia. We are paying our way," Mr Walsh said.

"Businesses like ours are investing billions, we're taking the risk of commodity cycle, we need a return on these investments

Mr Walsh said mining companies needed a steady tax regime to continue to invest, "not chopping and changing and moving the hurdles at every opportunity".

Impairments hit $US14.4 billion

The miner's net loss follows the shock ‘'dismiss-ignation'’ of former chief executive Tom Albanese in mid-January, and his replacement by Australian Mr Walsh, the long-serving iron ore chief executive.

Rio announced the surprise departure of Mr Albanese and energy chief Doug Ritchie on January 17, along with impairments of $US14.4 billion including about $US2.9 billion against the Mozambique coal assets acquired in the 2011 takeover of Riversdale Mining, and a further $US11 billion against its aluminium assets.

Rio has been plagued by the debt-fuelled acquisition of Alcan for $US38 billion in July 2007, which almost destroyed the company during the financial crisis.

Rio has since decided to sell or spin-off Pacific Aluminium and its prospects improved on Wednesday after the Northern Territory government offered to make cheap gas available to keep its struggling Gove alumina refinery at Nhulunbuy up and running. Rio is also trying to exit diamonds.

The elevation of Mr Walsh, formerly responsible for the Pilbara operations that deliver approximately 85 per cent of Rio’s earnings, was welcomed by investors as heralding a return to more disciplined capital management.

Rio’s ASX-listed shares have risen 11.6 per cent from $64.60 at the time of the appointment, to close at $72.07 today, up 2.3 per cent on the day.

In a profit preview this week, Deutsche Bank analysts said the 2012 results would signal ‘‘the return of the Rio of old; focused on productivity, costs, and maximising project returns’’.

Focus on cost cutting

Mr Walsh said in his statement that this year and 2014 will attempt to lift margins at existing businesses "by unlocking substantial productivity improvements, aggressively reducing costs and better managing our sustaining capital".

"We are targeting cumulative cash cost savings of more than $US5 billion to be achieved over the next two years, equivalent to an annual run rate of $US3 billion by 2014, assuming stable market and operating conditions, with significant additional cash savings in sustaining capital expenditure and exploration and evaluation spend."

Fitch: Πτώση 33% στις τιμές των ελληνικών ακινήτων από το 2008

Το 33% αξίας τους θα χάσουν τα ακίνητα από το 2008 μέχρι σήμερα, εκτιμά η Fitch και περιμένει περαιτέρω υποχώρηση κατά 10%-12%. 

Σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία, οι τιμές των ακινήτων μειώθηκαν στο τελευταίο τρίμηνο 2012 κατά 2,8% στην Αθήνα, 2,3% στη Θεσσαλονίκη και 2,6% στις άλλες πόλεις. 

Από τα προηγούμενα υψηλά τους, οι τιμές έχουν μειωθεί κατά 24,7% στην Αθήνα, κατά 29,6% στη Θεσσαλονίκη και κατά 22% στις άλλες χώρες. 

Μετά από αυτά, όμως, η Fitch εκτιμά ότι η πτώση θα έχει και συνέχεια, καθώς υπολογίζει ότι οι τιμές θα πιάσουν “πάτο” όταν θα έχουν μειωθεί κατά 35% στην Αθήνα, 40% στη Θεσσαλονίκη και 30% στις άλλες πόλεις. 

«Η τάση στις τιμές των κατοικιών αντανακλά τη γενικότερη εξασθένιση της ελληνικής οικονομίας κατά τα τελευταία χρόνια. Έπειτα από την ήπια επιδείνωση των οικονομικών συνθηκών το 2009, οι υφεσιακές πιέσεις εντάθηκαν από το 2010, καθώς τα μέτρα λιτότητας επηρέασαν την ικανότητα και την προθυμία των δανειοληπτών να εξυπηρετήσουν τα υφιστάμενα στεγαστικά δάνεια», εξηγεί η Fitch, προβλέποντας τη συρρίκνωση της ελληνικής οικονομίας κατά 4% φέτος. 

Κι όλα αυτά τη στιγμή που καταρρέει η οικοδομή και το απόθεμα των απούλητων σπιτιών έχει φτάσει τα 270.000. 

Σύμφωνα με την ΕΛΣΤΑΤ, το Νοέμβριο του 2012 εκδόθηκαν μόλις 1.150 οικοδομικές άδειες που αντιστοιχούν σε 189,7 χιλιάδες τ.μ.. Παρουσίασε δηλαδή μείωση κατά 66,5% στον αριθμό των αδειών, κατά 64% στην επιφάνεια και κατά 66,1% στον όγκο σε σχέση με τον αντίστοιχο μήνα του 2011. 

Σημαντική είναι η υποχώρηση στην οικοδομή και την περίοδο Δεκέμβριος 2011-Νοέμβριος 2012 καθώς καταγράφεται μείωση 37,3% στον αριθμό των αδειών, 35,4% στην επιφάνεια και 33,9% στον όγκο. Τη «χρυσή» περίοδο για την αγορά ακινήτων, το 2005 είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι σε 10 μήνες είχαν εκδοθεί σχεδόν 70.000 άδειες ενώ το 2012 μόλις 20.000, δηλαδή 50.000 οικοδομικές άδειες λιγότερες. 

Ένας μεγάλος αριθμός από τις εκδοθείσες άδειες δεν χτίστηκαν ποτέ ενώ χιλιάδες σπίτια έχουν μείνει ημιτελή, εξαιτίας της παντελούς έλλειψης αγοραστικού ενδιαφέροντος. 

Σύμφωνα, μάλιστα, με τις τελευταίες προβλέψεις, σε όλη την Ελλάδα υπάρχουν περί τα 270.000 ακίνητα που αναζητούν μάταια αγοραστή. 

Εντυπωσιακή είναι η ανάλυση που κάνει το Οικονομικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών σχετικά με το πότε θα μπορούσε να επανέλθει ο κλάδος της οικοδομής στα επίπεδα του 2005. Με βάση τον αριθμό των αδειών, αν από σήμερα η κτηματαγορά άρχισε να κινείται με ρυθμό αύξησης αδειών κατά 17,1% ετησίως θα χρειαστεί μια 8ετία για να επανέλθει στη «χρυσή» περίοδο. Ή αλλιώς, για να φτάσει η σημερινή ιδιωτική οικοδομική δραστηριότητα στα επίπεδα του 2005 θα πρέπει να αυξηθεί κατά 254%. 

Με βάση τον όγκο, μάλιστα, απαιτείται ετήσιος ρυθμός της τάξης του 22% για 8 χρόνια, δηλαδή για να φτάσει στα επίπεδα του 2005 χρειάζεται αύξηση κατά 389%. Παράγοντες της αγοράς εκτιμούν ότι είναι αδύνατο να συμβεί κάτι τέτοιο, οπότε η οικοδομή για να «αναγεννηθεί» θα πρέπει να περάσουν περισσότερα από 8 χρόνια. 

Η κατάρρευση της οικοδομής απειλεί άμεσα την οικονομία, τόσο εξαιτίας της δραματικής υποχώρησης των εσόδων από την κατασκευή νέων κτιρίων αλλά και τις πωλήσεις κατοικιών όσο και λόγω της μεγάλης πτώσης του τζίρου σε δεκάδες επαγγέλματα. Σύμφωνα με τον πρόεδρο της Ενωσης Κατασκευαστών Κτιρίων Ελλάδος, Δημ. Καψιμάλη, «14.000 οικοδομικές επιχειρήσεις έχουν παγώσει τη δραστηριότητά τους, ενώ 1 εκατ. εργαζόμενοι στην οικοδομή και σε περισσότερα από 140 συναφή επαγγέλματα είναι στην ουσία άνεργοι». 

Οσο για τις άμεσες απώλειες για την ελληνική οικονομία, σύμφωνα με έρευνα της Alpha Bank, από το 2000 μέχρι το 2012, οι επενδύσεις σε κατοικίες μειώθηκαν κατά 70%, δηλαδή χάθηκαν 7 στα 10 ευρώ. 

Προβλέψεις 

Σύμφωνα με τις προβλέψεις της εταιρείας συμβούλων ακινήτων, Colliers, το 2013 θα υπάρξει σταθεροποίηση και αργή ανάκαμψη. Ωστόσο, οι προβλέψεις της βασίζονται στο γεγονός ότι θα αποκατασταθεί η επιχειρηματική εμπιστοσύνη στην ελληνική αγορά και οι αποκρατικοποιήσεις θα αποτελέσουν την αιχμή του δόρατος. Η εταιρεία εκτιμά ότι οι μεταρρυθμίσεις κτίζουν βάσεις για τη δημιουργία ευκαιριών στην αγορά ακινήτων. Ειδικά για την αγορά γραφείων η Colliers αναμένει σταθεροποίηση στα ενοίκια κεντρικών αγορών και νέα μείωση 15%-25% στις δευτερεύουσες αγορές.

Barclays: Ζημιές £1,4 δισ. και περικοπές θέσεων εργασίας

Σε περικοπές 3.700 θέσεων εργασίας θα προχωρήσει η Barclays, ώστε να μειώσει το ετήσιο κόστος κατά £1,7 δισ. μετά τις ζημιές που κατέγραψε το 2012. 

Σύμφωνα με το πρακτορείο Bloomberg, οι καθαρές ζημιές ανήλθαν στο £1,04 δισ. σε σύγκριση με κέρδος £3 δισ. το 2011. 

Οι αναλυτές ανέμεναν ζημιές £307 εκ. 

Οι ζημιές της τράπεζας περιλαμβάνουν το πρόστιμο ύψους £290 εκ. που δέχθηκε τον Ιούνιο για παραποίηση του επιτοκιακού δείκτη Libor καθώς επίσης και £1,6 δισ. προβλέψεις για αποζημιώσεις σε πελάτες στους οποίους λανθασμένα πωλήθηκαν ασφάλειες αποπληρωμής δανείου. 

Η Barclays, είναι η πρώτη βρετανική τράπεζα που ανακοινώνει αποτελέσματα για το 2012.

Nasdaq in Buyout Talks with Carlyle Group

Nasdaq OMX Group, Inc “held discussions with private equity firm Carlyle Group about taking the stock exchange private” about three weeks ago, according to an exclusive report from FOX Business Network (FBN) Senior Correspondent Charlie Gasparino. Gaparino also says, “It’s unclear which side initiated the talks,” but that they were prompted by “heightened competition” and that Carlyle Group LP (NYSE:CG) Chief Financial Officer Adena Friedman is a “key player in the negotiations.”

“NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc. (NADAQ:NDAQ) recently held discussions with private equity firm Carlyle Group about taking the stock exchange private, just months after its main rival, the New York Stock Exchange, agreed to be purchased by the Atlanta-based Intercontinental Exchange. Nasdaq held these discussions about three weeks ago, according to two people with direct knowledge of the deal. One person with knowledge of the deal says the NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc. (NADAQ:NDAQ) isn’t ‘currently in discussions with any private equity firm’ though this person said that could change.”

“It’s unclear which side initiated the talks, but people with direct knowledge of the discussions say the heightened competition caused [Nasdaq CEO Bob] Greifeld to discuss with officials from Carlyle a possible deal to take Nasdaq private. 



One of the key players in the negotiations was Carlyle chief financial officer Adena Friedman, who left Nasdaq in 2011 as its CFO and head of corporate strategy. Friedman joined the Nasdaq in 1993, and led the exchange’s major deals: its purchase of the Boston Stock Exchange, the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, and the OMX, a group of Nordic exchanges. A Nasdaq spokesman said: ‘We don’t comment on market rumors or speculation.’ A Carlyle spokesman had no immediate comment.”

Peugeot writes off 4bn euros as car market worsens

French car maker PSA Peugeot Citroen is writing down the value of its assets by 4.1bn euros ($5.5bn; £3.5bn) to reflect the worsening state of the car market.

Peugeot said new accounting guidelines had prompted the move and that it was reversible when conditions improve.

The statement comes ahead of next week's earnings and indicates it will report heavy losses for the period.

Global sales at France's largest car firm fell 16% in 2012 to less than three million.

Peugeot is in the process of cutting 8,000 jobs and closing a factory to stem losses.

Chief financial officer Jean-Baptise de Chatillon said: "There was a realisation in the second half that the crisis was going to be longer than expected... This is purely an accounting adjustment which has nothing to do with operations."

France's market regulator last year demanded that companies value their assets more realistically - prompting a 7.4bn-euro charge from Credit Agricole.

A report in the French newspaper Liberation said the government was examining the possibility of buying a stake in the struggling company as a "last-resort plan".

Peugeot, a founding member of the main French stock market index, the Cac-40, was demoted last year as a result of its tumbling share price.

RBS Fined $612M by Regulators for Manipulating Libor Rate

Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, Britain’s biggest publicly owned lender, will pay about $612 million in fines for manipulating interest rates, the second- largest penalty imposed in a global regulatory probe.

The lender will pay $325 million to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, $150 million to the Department of Justice and 87.5 million pounds ($137 million) to the U.K.’s Financial Services Authority, the CFTC said in a statement today. RBS’s Japanese unit agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud as part of a deal with the Justice Department, the CFTC said.

“The public is deprived of an honest benchmark interest rate when a group of traders sits around a desk for years falsely spinning their bank’s Libor submissions, trying to manufacture winning trades,” said David Meister, the CFTC’s Director of Enforcement. “That’s what happened at RBS.”

The penalty is the biggest blow to Chief Executive Officer Stephen Hester’s attempt to overhaul the lender after it took 45.5 billion pounds from taxpayers in the largest bank bailout in history in 2008. The fine, the third to result from the global probe so far, exceeds the 290 million pounds Barclays Plc paid in June, and is second only to the $1.5 billion Switzerland’s UBS AG paid in December.

From at least 2006, more than a dozen RBS traders made “hundreds” of attempts to rig yen and Swiss franc Libor to benefit their positions, the regulator said. At times, the RBS employees succeeded in rigging the benchmark, the CFTC said.

Britain’s largest publicly owned bank rose 0.4 percent to 338.8 pence as of 1:09 p.m. in London. The shares have gained 17 percent over the past year. The U.K. paid the equivalent of 502 pence for the shares as part of the government rescue and British taxpayers own about 81 percent of the firm.

Με την ολοκλήρωση της συναλλαγής, ο Όμιλος ΜΤΝ θα κατέχει το 100% της ΜΤΝ Κύπρου. Η κίνηση αποτελεί μέρος της ευρύτερης στρατηγικής του Ομίλου ΜΤΝ να καταστήσει την Κύπρο κόμβο καινοτομίας για την ανάπτυξη νέων προϊόντων και υπηρεσιών για τον Όμιλο.

Ο Πρόεδρος και Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος του Ομίλου ΜΤΝ, Sifiso Dabengwa, δήλωσε: «Η Κύπρος είναι ένα σημαντικό μέλος του Ομίλου ΜΤΝ, καθώς εκπροσωπεί μία από τις πιο ανεπτυγμένες αγορές μας. Από το 2008, η ΜΤΝ Κύπρου έχει αυξήσει το μερίδιο αγοράς της από 14% σε 32,8% και τους συνδρομητές της από 105.000 σε 316.000 έως τις 30 Σεπτεμβρίου 2012. Η εξαγορά υπόκειται στην έγκριση της Επιτροπής Προστασίας του Ανταγωνισμού της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας.

 Στη δική της ανακοίνωση η μητρική της Amaracos, Cyprus Trading Corporation Plc (CTC), μέλος του Ομίλου Σιακόλα, αναφέρει ότι η επένδυσή της στην ΜΤΝ Κύπρου έχει ωριμάσει και ότι οι συνθήκες ευνοούν πώληση και ως εκ τούτου αποφάσισε την εκποίησή της. "Βασισμένοι στις άριστες σχέσεις τους, οι δύο Όμιλοι έχουν εκδηλώσει την επιθυμία τους να συνεχίσουν τη συνεργασία και αλληλοϋποστήριξή τους", σημειώνεται.

Dell Taken Private as PC Market Slump Spurs $24.4 Billion Buyout

Dell Inc. (DELL), the world’s third-biggest maker of personal computers, is going private in a deal valued at $24.4 billion, undertaking the biggest leveraged buyout since the financial crisis.

Chief Executive Officer Michael Dell and Silver Lake Management LLC will pay $13.65 a share, the companies said today in a statement. That’s 25 percent more than the closing price of $10.88 on Jan. 11, the last trading day before the buyout discussions became public. Michael Dell is taking back majority control of the company he started almost three decades ago.

The stock has lost more than half its value since January 2007, when Dell resumed his role as CEO, amid investor dismay with management’s failure to cope with upstart competitors in mobile and cloud computing. By going private after a quarter- century as a publicly traded company, Dell is seeking more leeway to cut jobs and adopt strategy shifts needed to court high-margin customers spending billions on data centers.

“They obviously see the writing on the wall,” said Daniel Morgan, a senior portfolio manager at Synovus Trust Co. in Atlanta. “They understand what the challenges are and realize they need to refurbish what they are doing.”

Even as being private shields Round Rock, Texas-based Dell from answering to public shareholders on a quarter-by-quarter basis, it subjects the company to new constraints, including the addition of debt.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is contributing $2 billion, according to the statement. Silver Lake, a technology-focused private-equity firm, was working with partners to line up about $15 billion in funds for the buyout, people familiar with the matter have said.

Dell, which trails Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) and Lenovo Group Ltd. (992) in the PC market, slid 2.6 percent to $13.27 on Feb. 4. Its stock plummeted 31 percent last year as it struggled to adapt to the industry-wide shift to smartphones, tablet computers and cloud computing services.

Ορφανίδης: Προκηρύσσονται προσφορές

Σε προκήρυξη προσφορών που θα αφορά τόσο το σύνολο όσο και μεμονωμένα περιουσιακά στοιχεία της εταιρείας Ορφανίδης αναμένεται να προχωρήσουν σύντομα οι διαχειριστές της εταιρείας Μιχάλης Αβραάμ και Αντρέας Ανδρονίκου.

 Αν και ακόμα βρίσκονται στα πρώτα στάδια της διαδικασίας και στην περισυλλογή πληροφοριών, θεωρείται βέβαιο πως οι διαχειριστές της εταιρείας θα προχωρήσουν στην προκήρυξη προσφορών για περιουσιακά στοιχεία της εταιρείας. 

Από κύκλους των διαχειριστών διαρρέει πως τους προβληματίζει ιδιαίτερα το θέμα του προσωπικού της εταιρείας, αν και με το κλείσιμο πολλών καταστημάτων και με εννιά μόνο να υπολειτουργούν, η πώληση ολόκληρης της επιχείρησης φαντάζει δύσκολη αλλά και ενδεχομένως ασύμφορη. Άλλωστε, όταν ο Α. Ανδρονίκου παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά και προτάθηκε από την εταιρεία Ορφανίδης για να αναλάβει παραλήπτης διαχειριστής είχε αναφέρει πως η εταιρεία δεν είναι βιώσιμη ακόμα και αν επιστρέψει σε κερδοφορία.

Είχε αναφέρει επίσης πως στόχος τους ήταν η συνεργασία με τους προμηθευτές καθώς τα προϊόντα και η αξία της επιχείρησης ήταν μηδαμινή. Με τα δεδομένα Δεκεμβρίου, ο Α. Ανδρονίκου ήταν αισιόδοξος πως μέσα σε περίοδο 6-8 εβδομάδων, δηλαδή εντός Φεβρουαρίου θα μπορούσε να εξεύρει αγοραστή για την επιχείρηση. Μάλιστα, εκείνη την περίοδο ακούγονταν και διάφορα ονόματα ομίλων του εξωτερικού.

 Στο διάστημα που παρήλθε και με τις άσχημες εξελίξεις στις υπεραγορές φαίνεται πως το συγκεκριμένο ενδιαφέρον ατόνησε και οι τελευταίες πληροφορίες θέλουν ενδιαφέρον από εγχώριες αλυσίδες για εξαγορά ή ενοικίαση μεμονωμένων ακινήτων της Ορφανίδης.  Όσον αφορά την αίτηση εκκαθάρισης της εταιρείας που προχωρά σε δικαστικό επίπεδο, προβληματίζει τους δύο διαχειριστές οι οποίοι θα εξετάσουν τη νομική πτυχή του θέματος προτού λάβουν τις όποιες αποφάσεις τους αφού το πρώτιστο που θέλουν είναι να κινηθούν στα πλαίσια που τους επιτρέπει η σχετική νομοθεσία.

Ζημίες 2,1 δισ. δολ. για τη UBS

Ζημιογόνο ήταν το τέταρτο τρίμηνο για τη UBS, τη μεγαλύτερη τράπεζα της Ελβετίας, εξαιτίας του προστίμου που της επιβλήθηκε για την εμπλοκή της στο σκάνδαλο χειραγώγησης των διατραπεζικών επιτοκίων αλλά και των δαπανών που σχετίζονται με τις περικοπές θέσεων εργασίας.

 Συγκεκριμένα, η τράπεζα εμφάνισε καθαρές ζημιές ύψους 1,89 δισ. ελβετικών φράγκων (2,08 δισ. δολ.), έναντι κερδών 323 εκατ. ελβετικών φράγκων ένα χρόνο νωρίτερα. Οι αναλυτές ανέμεναν ζημιές 2,16 δισ. φράγκων. Παρά τις ζημιές, η UBS σχεδιάζει να διανείμει μέρισμα 15 σεντίμ ανά μετοχή, έναντι μερίσματος 10 σεντίμ που διένειμε την προηγούμενη χρονιά. Οι μετοχές της, στη Ζυρίχη, έχουν ενισχυθεί το τελευταίο εξάμηνο κατά 48%.

Dell buyout reportedly near

Dell deal near? Shares of the Texas-based company have dropped 1.5% at $13.42, as reports swirl on a buyout that would take them private.

According the Bloomberg, founder Michael Dell is working with firm Silver Lake Management on a deal that would give him majority control of the company. Microsoft is reportedly adding funds to help usher the deal along.

Rumors of a buyout first reported in mid-January have helped give Dell stock a lift, with shares vaulting $3 since January 11.

Ανεργία-σοκ στην Κύπρο (Στοιχεία Eurostat)

Στο 14,7% του ενεργού πληθυσμού αυξήθηκε η ανεργία στην Κύπρο το Δεκέμβριο από 14,2% το Νοέμβριο, σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία που έδωσε σημερα στη δημοσιότητα η Eurostat.

Οπως προκύπτει από τα κοινοτικά στοιχεία, η μέση ανεργία στην ευρωζώνη κυμάνθηκε στο 11,7% (αμετάβλητη), ενώ στο σύνολο της ΕΕ παρέμεινε επίσης αμετάβλητη στο 10,7 %.

Αναφορικά με τις επιμέρους επιδόσεις της Κύπρου, το Δεκέμβριο το ποσοστό ανεργίας στους άνδρες ήταν 15,6%, στις γυναίκες 13,9% και στους νέους κάτω των 25 ετών 28,5%. Ο μέσος όρος ανεργίας στην Ευρωζώνη στους άνδρες ήταν 11,6%, στις γυναίκες 11,8% και στους νέους κάτω των 25 ετών στο 24,0%.
Για την Ελλάδα τα στοιχεία της Eurostat αφορούν τον Οκτώβριο, όπου η συνολική ανεργία ανήλθε στο 26,8%, ποσοστό που ήταν το ψηλότερο στην ΕΕ. Στις επιμέρους κατηγορίες στην Ελλάδα, το ποσοστό ανεργίας στους άνδρες ήταν 24,1%, στις γυναίκες 30,4% και στους νέους κάτω των 25 ετών 57,6%. Και στις τρεις κατηγορίες ανέργων η Ελλάδα είχε τις χειρότερες επιδόσεις στην ΕΕ.

Το Δεκέμβριο η ΕΕ είχε 25,926 εκατ. άνεργους, εκ των οποίων 18,715 αφορούσαν την Ευρωζώνη. Σε ένα έτος, δηλαδή το Δεκέμβριο του 2012 σε σχέση με τον ίδιο μήνα του 2011 η ανεργία αυξήθηκε κατά 1,796 εκατ. άτομα στην Ευρωζώνη.
Οι χώρες στις οποίες καταγράφηκε η μεγαλύτερη αύξηση της ανεργίας σε ένα έτος ήταν η Ελλάδα (από 19,7% σε 26,8%), η Κύπρος (από 9,7% σε 14,7%) και η Ισπανία (από 23,2% σε 26,1%).

Το Δεκέμβριο του 2012 ο αριθμός των ανέργων ηλικίας κάτω των 25 ετών έφτασε στο σύνολο της ΕΕ τα 5,702 εκατομμύρια, εκ των οποίων 3,624 εκατ. άτομα αφορούσαν τις χώρες της Ευρωζώνης. Μέσα σε ένα έτος οι άνεργοι αυτής της κατηγορίας αυξήθηκαν κατά 303.000 στην Ευρωζώνη.
Το συνολικό ποσοστό ανεργίας επί του ενεργού πληθυσμού, που καταγράφηκε στα κράτη μέλη της Ευρωζώνης το Δεκέμβριο ήταν το εξής: Αυστρία 4,3%, Λουξεμβούργο 5,3%, Γερμανία 5,3%, Ολλανδία 5,8%, Μάλτα 6,7%, Βέλγιο 7,5%, Φινλανδία 7,7%, Εσθονία (Νοέμβριος 2012) 9,9%, Σλοβενία 10,0%, Γαλλία 10,6%, Ιταλία 11,2%, Κύπρος 14,7%, Σλοβακία 14,7%, Ιρλανδία 14,7%, Πορτογαλία 16,5%, Ισπανία 26,1%, Ελλάδα 26,8% (Οκτώβριος 2012).

Ορφανίδης: Διαχειριστή διόρισε η Λαϊκή

Η Λαϊκή Τράπεζα πήρε τη μεγάλη απόφαση διορισμού διαχειριστή για την αλυσίδα υπεραγορών Ορφανίδη. Σημειώνεται πως διαχειριστές της εταιρείας θα είναι οι Μιχάλης Αβραάμ και Ανδρέας Ανδρονίκου. 

 Τονίζεται ότι τα δύο άτομα που διορίστηκαν ως διαχειριστές της αλυσίδας υπεραγορών είναι άτομα από το περιβάλλον αφενός της Λαϊκής Τράπεζας και αφετέρου του Χρήστου Ορφανίδη, με αποτέλεσμα να ικανοποιούνται οι επιθυμίες και των δύο πλευρών για το μέλλον της εταιρείας. 

 Ο Μ. Αβραάμ της Michalis Avraam & Partners Ltd συνεργάζεται με τη Λαϊκή Τράπεζα εδώ και κάποιο διάστημα για διάφορα θέματα ενώ ο Α. Ανδρονίκου της UHY Hacker Young LLP είναι το άτομο που είχε εισηγηθεί η εταιρεία Ορφανίδης για να διοριστεί διαχειριστής από τον περασμένο Δεκέμβριο. Με τον κίνδυνο της δικαστικής απόφασης για εκκαθάριση της εταιρείας, οι διαχειριστές καλούνται είτε να εξεύρουν αγοραστή για ολόκληρη της επιχείρηση είτε για περιουσιακά της στοιχεία αποσπασματικά.

Κύπρος: Υποβάθμιση τραπεζών από Fitch

Σε υποβάθμιση της Τράπεζας Κύπρου, Λαϊκής και Ελληνικής προχώρησε σήμερα ο οίκος πιστοληπτικής αξιολόγησης Fitch, μετά την υποβάθμιση της χώρας στις 25 Ιανουαρίου.

Συγκεκριμένα, υποβαθμίστηκαν τα μακροπρόθεσμα ratings και support ratings floors σε Β από BB-.

Όπως αναφέρεται στην ανακοίνωση του οίκου, οι υποβαθμίσεις των τραπεζών αντανακλούν την αποδυνάμωση της ικανότητας του κράτους να παρέχει στήριξη στις τράπεζες.

Το outlook για τα ratings χρηματοοικονομικής ευρωστίας είναι αρνητικό, όπως και το outlook της χώρας.

Τα βραχυπρόθεσμα ratings και support ratings έχουν επιβεβαιωθεί στο Β και 4 αντίστοιχα.

Ο οίκος αναφέρει ότι επικρατεί αβεβαιότητα όσον αφορά τη χρονική τοποθέτηση και τις λεπτομέρειες ενός επίσημου προγράμματος χρηματοδότησης της Κύπρου, περιλαμβανομένου του κόστους ανακεφαλαιοποίησης του τραπεζικού τομέα.

Ωστόσο, αναμένεται ότι το πρόγραμμα θα συμφωνηθεί πριν από τις 3 Ιουνίου και ότι θα παρέχει χρηματοδότηση για την ανακεφαλαιοποίηση του τραπεζικού συστήματος, η οποία εκτιμάται ότι μπορεί να στοιχίσει μέχρι και €10 δισ.

Οι Fitch σημειώνουν ότι μετά την ανακεφαλαιοποίηση θα προχωρήσουν σε επαναξιολόγηση των ratings των μεγάλων κυπριακών τραπεζών.

Παράλληλα σημειώνουν ότι οι κρατικοί και τραπεζικοί κίνδυνοι είναι στενά συνδεδεμένοι στην Κύπρο και ότι η έλλειψη προόδου στις διαπραγματεύσεις με την τρόικα θα θέσουν το πρόγραμμα στήριξης, που είναι αναγκαίο για την ανακαιφαλαιοποίηση των τραπεζών, σε κίνδυνο.

Ο οίκος ενσωματώνει στην αξιολόγησή του για τις τρεις κυπριακές τράπεζες α)την συστημικη τους σημασία για την εγχώρια οικονομία, β)το περιορισμένο μέρος «διασώσιμου» χρέους σε σχέση με τις πιθανές ανάγκες ανακεφαλαιοποίησης, και γ)τη στήριξη βασικών τραπεζικών πιστωτών σε άλλες διασώσεις τραπεζών της ευρωζώνης κατά τη διάρκεια της κρίσης.

Αναφέρουν επίσης ότι οι αρνητικές προοπτικές καταδεικνύουν ότι οποιαδήποτε περαιτέρω υποβάθμιση του rating της Κύπρου, μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε περαιτέρω υποβάθμιση των τραπεζών. Επιπρόσθετα, οποιαδήποτε εξέλιξη μειώνει την πιθανότητα διεθνούς στήριξης για τους πιστωτές των τραπεζών μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε περαιτέρω υποβάθμιση των ratings των τραπεζών.

Οι Fitch εκτιμούν ότι εκτός από την ένεση του €1,8 δισ. από την κυβέρνηση στην Λαϊκή Τράπεζα τον Ιούλιο του 2012, οι τρεις μεγάλες κυπριακές τράπεζες είναι πιθανό να χρειαστούν περαιτέρω κεφαλαιακές ενέσεις ύψους τουλάχιστον €4,8 δισ. υπό ένα βασικό σενάριο και €6,6 δισ. στην περίπτωση ενός δυσμενούς σεναρίου. Τα ποσά ωστόσο βρίσκονται εντός του πλαισίου των €10 δισ. αφήνωντας περιθώριο για τη στήριξη του συνεργατισμού, όπως σημειώνεται. Οι Fitch αναγνωρίσουν επίσης ότι οι εκτιμήσεις τους υπόκεινται σε σημαντική αβεβαιότητα και είναι ευαίσθητες ως προς τις αλλαγές στις υποθέσεις.

Toyota: Ανακαλεί 752.000 Corolla στις ΗΠΑ

Νέο πλήγμα αξιοπιστίας για την ιαπωνική αυτοκινητοβιομηχανία Toyota η οποία ανακοίνωσε ότι ανακαλεί 752.000 οχήματα τύπου Corolla και Corolla Matrix από την αμερικανική αγορά.

Αιτία είναι προβλήματα που διαπιστώθηκαν στους αερόσακους των συγκεκριμένων μοντέλων. Επίσης, η αυτοκινητοβιομηχανία ανακοίνωσε ότι ανακαλεί 270.000 Lexus IS στις ΗΠΑ λόγω προβλημάτων στους υαλοκαθαριστήρες.

Ανακάμπτει ο τομέας ακινήτων στις ΗΠΑ

Οι πωλήσεις νέων οικιών σημείωσαν πτώση στις ΗΠΑ το Δεκέμβριο σε σχέση με τον Νοέμβριο,

 

ανακοίνωσε η Υπηρεσία Εμπορίου την Παρασκευή, αλλά ολόκληρο το έτος είχε άνοδο κατά 20% 

από το 2011, καθώς ο τομέας ακινήτων αρχίζει να ανακάμπτει μετά από βαθιά ύφεση. 

Όπως μεταδίδει το Γαλλικό Πρακτορείο Ειδήσεων οι πωλήσεις Δεκεμβρίου ήταν 369.000 κάτω από 398.000 το Νοέμβριο αλλά την ίδια ώρα καταγράφοντας καλύτερους ρυθμούς από το υπόλοιπο έτος.

Η διάμεση τιμή οικιών που πουλήθηκαν σημείωσε άνοδο της τάξης του 1,3% σε $248.900, $30.300 ψηλότερη από ότι τον προηγούμενο χρόνο.

Σύμφωνα με τις εκτιμήσεις της Υπηρεσίας, συνολικά το 2012 πουλήθηκαν 367.000 νέες οικίες, 19,9% περισσότερες από το 2011.

«Η ανοδική τάση στις πωλήσεις νέων σπιτιών συνεχίζεται παρά την αστάθεια που παρατηρείται μήνα με το μήνα», είπε η Λίντσεϊ Πιέγκζα της εταιρείας FTN Financial.

Καθώς οι καταναλωτές ‘καθαρίζουν’ τους ισολογισμούς τους και πιστεύουν ότι ο τομέας ακινήτων σταθεροποιείται, συνεχίζει να αυξάνεται η ζήτηση, πρόσθεσε.

Τον περασμένο Νοέμβριο, ο οίκος είχε υποβαθμίσει ξανά την Κύπρο σε BB- από BB+.

Google's fourth-quarter results shine after ad rate decline slows

Revenue from Google Inc's core Internet business outpaced many analysts' expectations during the crucial holiday quarter and advertising rates fell less than in previous periods, pushing its shares up roughly 5 percent.

The world's largest Internet search company introduced new product listings during the fourth quarter - typically its strongest - and also benefited from business growth in international markets, analysts said.

Excluding traffic-acquisition costs, the business generated net revenue of $9.83 billion, up from $8.13 billion a year earlier, Google reported on Tuesday. That surpassed a $9.6 billion average forecast from six analysts polled by Reuters.

"Business looked really strong, especially from a profitability perspective. They really grew their margins in the core business," said Sameet Sinha, an analyst with B. Riley Caris. "Most of that strength seems to be coming from international markets which grew revenues quite substantially: up 23 percent year over year, versus the 15 percent growth in the third quarter."

Average cost-per-click, a critical metric that denotes the price advertisers pay Google, declined 6 percent from a year ago, the fifth consecutive quarter of decline but an improvement over the third quarter's 15 percent slide.

Google executives told analysts on a conference call that policy changes related to the quality and quantity of ads appearing on certain of its Web properties had helped shore-up click prices while lowering the overall growth rate of paid clicks in the holiday quarter.

"Click prices are still declining, but it's better than expected," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis.

The decline in Google's click prices is partly a result of consumers' shift to smartphones, where Google's ad rates are lower than those on Google's standard website.

Google cited growing demand for its spectrum of online advertising services, including mobile ads, display ads, video ads and its newly-launched product listings, though the company did not provide specific financial results for the individual businesses.

"More small enterprises increasing their spending collectively on Google's various products," continues to drive Google's growth, said Pivotal Research Group Analyst Brian Wieser.

MOTOROLA MOBILITY "STILL LOSING MONEY"

Investors shrugged off another quarterly loss at the Motorola Mobility mobile phone business Google acquired last year, one of various "big bets" that Google Chief Executive Larry Page has made to better position the company for a changing technology landscape defined by mobile gadgets and social networking.

"We now live in a multi-screen world," said Page, adding that "we feel naked without our smartphone."

Page said that Google had work to do in "managing our supply better as well as building a great customer experience," but said Google remains squarely focused on opportunities around newfangled devices such as smartphones.

Asked about the potential threat from Facebook Inc's recently-launched social networking search product, Page cited Google's years of online search experience and innovations such as voice-based search.

Consolidated net income in the fourth quarter was $2.89 billion or $8.62 per share, compared with $2.71 billion, or $8.22 per share, in the year-ago period when Google had not yet acquired Motorola.

Excluding certain items, Google said it earned $10.65 per share in the fourth quarter.

"The core business is a great business and the fourth-quarter is always a time for Google to shine. However, Motorola is still losing money and click rates still declined. They only declined 6 percent, but go back four or five quarters and click prices were improving. So mobile is still pressuring click prices," Gillis said.

The company posted consolidated revenue - which includes its Motorola Mobility mobile phone business but not the television set-top box business it recently agreed to sell - off $14.42 billion on Tuesday.

Motorola Mobility had an operating loss of $353 million during the quarter.

Google Finance Chief Patrick Pichette warned of more fluctuations in Motorola's financial results in the coming quarters as Google continues to restructure that business.

And he noted that Google was working through 12 months to 18 months of product pipeline that Google inherited in the acquisition.

Google announced plans to sell the Motorola Home television set top box business to Arris Group Inc for $2.35 billion. The company also has said it is focused on developing a smaller line-up of products in the mobile phone business.

Apple reports $54.5b revenue Q1 2013 results: 47.8m iPhones, 22.9m iPads, 4.1m Macs, 12.7m iPods

As promised, Apple has announced its Q1 2013 results. This quarter is the most recent holiday quarter. The quarter followed the launches of the iPhone 5, new iPods, new Macs (like the new iMacs and MacBook Pro), and the new iPads (iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad). Apple will hold a conference call regarding today’s announcement. We will live blog it here. at 5 PM EST/ 2 PM PST.

In line with its several new high-profile product launches, Apple reported a record quarter for Q1 2013. Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones, 22.9 million iPads, 4.1 million Macs, and 12.7 million iPods in the quarter. As a comparison, Apple’s Q1 2012 numbers (the year ago quarter) include 37 million iPhone sales, 15.4 million iPads, 5.2 million Macs, and 15.4 million iPods sold. Apple’s Q1 2013 revenue beat its estimate of $52 billion with $54.5 billion in revenue. This comes out to $13.1 billion in net profit, or $13.81 per diluted share. “Gross margin was 38.6 percent compared to 44.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 61 percent of the quarter’s revenue”, according to Apple.

McDonalds: Αποτελέσματα πέραν των εκτιμήσεων

Αύξηση κερδών και εσόδων σημείωσε το τέταρτο τρίμηνο η McDonald's Corp., όπως μεταδίδουν ξένα ειδησεογραφικά πρακτορεία. Τα κέρδη της εταιρείας σημείωσαν άνοδο 1% στα 1,4 δισ. δολ., ή 1,38 δολ. ανά μετοχή, από 1,38 δισ. δολ., ή 1,33 δολ. ανά μετοχή, ενώ οι πωλήσεις αυξήθηκαν 1,9% στα 6,95 δισ. δολ. από 6,82 δισ. δολ.

Από τη μεριά τους αναλυτές που συμμετείχαν σε δημοσκόπηση της Thomson Reuters ανέμεναν κέρδη ανά μετοχή 1,33 δολ. και έσοδα 6,89 δισ. δολ.

Οι συγκρινόμενες πωλήσεις στις ΗΠΑ αυξήθηκαν 0,3%, στην Ευρώπη υποχώρησαν 0,6%, ενώ στην Ασία/Ειρηνικός, Μέση Ανατολ

Τέλος, η εταιρεία ανακοίνωσε πως σχεδιάζει να επενδύσει 3,2 δισ. δολ. ώστε να ανοίξει 1.500 έως 1.600 νέα εστιατόρια.
