Apple Inc. (AAPL) Is World’s Most Admired Company: Fortune

Fortune has released its list of the world's most admired companies. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has kept its spot on top, despite tough competition.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has retained its spot at the top of the Fortune list of the most admired companies in the world. Rumors swirled earlier this week, and were repeated here, that the company would lose its number one position. That view has proven unfounded – as the Cupertino company celebrates another year on top.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) 1st on list:

The list was remarkable in that the first thirteen places were all filled by American companies. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) stood at number one followed by Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), and The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO). Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) rounded out the top five.

At number fourteen came Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (ETR:BMW), the prestigious German car manufacturer. It was the topmost company on the list that was not based in the United States.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) number one spot was secured with a score of 8.24 on the Fortune Index. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) put up a score of 8.1 for second and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) managed 7.28 for the third spot on the list. The American dominance of the list may be a cause for concern about accuracy, though it reflects the perceived importance of the tech industry, and the dominance of the United States in that field.

The list is enumerated by taking the 1,000 largest US companies and non-US firms on the Fortune 500 list that have revenue equal to or greater than $10 billion. Directors, executives and analysts were asked to rate the firms on nine separate categories. The most admired companies are selected from a list of the firms that finished in the top 25% of the list last year and firm’s that finished in the top 20% of their industry lists last year.

US dominance of the field is probably a little overblown, and the grip that tech companies have on the collective attention has clearly made them over represented on this list. Yes the firms are important, but it’s difficult to justify having three of them at the top of a most admired list.

Those weaknesses will do little to dissuade fans of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) from celebrating the small victory, and it is certainly a good sign for the company. It has not been hit as hard by various blunders as some speculated. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will need to continue battling in the mobile device sector, rather than the “most admired” sector. Awards are nice though.

JPMorgan Chase Plans 4,000 Job Cuts This Year

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) is the latest financial institution to announce

job cuts this year. The bank is planning 4,000 cuts this year, which is

about 1 percent of the bank’s workforce. A spokesperson said most of

those cuts will come through attrition.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) is the latest financial institution to
order another round of job cuts. The financial industry has been hit hard
by job losses in recent years. On Monday, it was announced that
Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE:GS) was planning more job cuts.
JPMorgan Chase
Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) has already announced that it doesn’t plan to
cut any more jobs any time soon, although we have yet to hear from
Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) on whether it will follow through on the cuts it
was said to be planning last month.
Today’s cuts from JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) were announced in a
presentation on the bank’s website. CEO, Jamie Dimo,n said the bank will
eliminate about 4,000 jobs this year, with the bulk of those jobs coming from
the bank’s mortgage division. The number amounts to about 1 percent of the
bank’s staff. A spokesperson for the bank told Reuters that most of the cuts
will come through attrition.
Dimon is in the process of reducing the bank’s expenses by $1 billion in the wake of three consecutive years of reporting record net income. The bank also said it expects to have $28 billion in cumulative excess capital next year.
Bloomberg reports that JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) could see profits from its mortgage division fall this year because of increased competition and almost record low interest rates. In recent years, the bank’s mortgage profits have been one of the main drivers of its earnings.

Moody's Downgrades UK Rating From AAA to AA1

Credit ratings agency Moody's Investors Service downgraded Britain's government bond rating one notch from the top AAA to AA1 Friday, saying sluggish growth and rising debt were weakening the country's medium-term outlook.
Treasury chief George Osborne said the blow only redoubled his resolve "to deliver our economic recovery plan," based on deep spending cuts.
Moody's said "subdued" growth prospects and a "high and rising debt burden" were weighing on the British economy.
The agency said rising debt meant "a deterioration in the shock-absorption capacity of the government's balance sheet, which is unlikely to reverse before 2016."
It said, though, that "the U.K.'s creditworthiness remains extremely high," and its outlook was stable.
Moody's said that "a combination of political will and medium-term fundamental underlying economic strengths will, in time, allow the government to implement its fiscal consolidation plan and reverse the U.K.'s debt trajectory."
For the British government, the move was unwelcome but not unexpected. All three of the big rating agencies — Moody's, Standard & Poor's and Fitch — had placed Britain's rating on negative watch, as the economy continues to struggle.
The Conservative-led government is cutting 50 billion pounds ($80 billion) in spending through 2015 in a bid to slash the national debt, which stands at more than 1 trillion pounds, over 70 percent of GDP.
Moody's said it expected that level to peak at just over 96 percent of GDP in 2016.
Public sector borrowing remains stubbornly high, and is forecast by the government's Office for Budget Responsibility to be 120 billion pounds for 2013.
Critics say the government's austerity policy has failed to kick-start the economy, which has been through two periods of recession since 2008.
The U.K. emerged from a nine-month recession in the third quarter, when GDP grew by 0.9 percent. But the economy contracted by a worse-than-expected 0.3 percent in the last three months of 2012.
Glimmers of good news for the government include a stable unemployment rate — 7.8 percent in the last quarter — and low interest rates.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond fell over the year from 2.29 percent in February of 2012 to 2.11 percent now.
Osborne said in a statement that the downgrade was "a stark reminder of the debt problems facing our country," with a debt accumulated over the years exacerbated by Europe's economic crisis.
"Far from weakening our resolve to deliver our economic recovery plan, this decision redoubles it," he said, promising to press on with debt-cutting.
"We will go on delivering the plan that has cut the deficit by a quarter, and given us record low interest rates and record numbers of jobs," Osborne said.

Tax havens: The missing $20 trillion

In Europe the anger has focused on big firms. Amazon and Starbucks have faced consumer boycotts for using clever accounting tricks to book profits in tax havens while reducing their bills in the countries where they do business. David Cameron has put tackling corporate tax-avoidance at the top of the G8 agenda. America has taken aim at tax-dodging individuals and the banks that help them. Congress has passed the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which forces foreign financial firms to disclose their American clients. Any whiff of offshore funds has become a political liability.

During last year’s presidential campaign Mitt Romney was excoriated by Democrats for his holdings in the Cayman Islands. Now Jack Lew, Barack Obama’s nominee for treasury secretary, is under fire for once having an interest in a Cayman fund.CIVILISATION works only if those who enjoy its benefits are also prepared to pay their share of the costs. People and companies that avoid tax are therefore unpopular at the best of times, so it is not surprising that when governments and individuals everywhere are scrimping to pay their bills, attacks are mounting on tax havens and those that use them.

Dodgy of DelawareGetting rich people to pay their dues is an admirable ambition, but this attack is both hypocritical and misguided. It may be good populist politics, but leaders who want to make their countries work better should focus instead on cleaning up their own back yards and reforming their tax systems.

The archetypal tax haven may be a palm-fringed island, but as our special report this week makes clear, there is nothing small about offshore finance. If you define a tax haven as a place that tries to attract non-resident funds by offering light regulation, low (or zero) taxation and secrecy, then the world has 50-60 such havens. These serve as domiciles for more than 2m companies and thousands of banks, funds and insurers. Nobody really knows how much money is stashed away: estimates vary from way below to way above $20 trillion.

Not all these havens are in sunny climes; indeed not all are technically offshore. Mr Obama likes to cite Ugland House, a building in the Cayman Islands that is officially home to 18,000 companies, as the epitome of a rigged system. But Ugland House is not a patch on Delaware (population 917,092), which is home to 945,000 companies, many of which are dodgy shells. Miami is a massive offshore banking centre, offering depositors from emerging markets the sort of protection from prying eyes that their home countries can no longer get away with. The City of London, which pioneered offshore currency trading in the 1950s, still specialises in helping non-residents get around the rules. British shell companies and limited-liability partnerships regularly crop up in criminal cases. London is no better than the Cayman Islands when it comes to controls against money laundering. Other European Union countries are global hubs for a different sort of tax avoidance: companies divert profits to brass-plate subsidiaries in low-tax Luxembourg, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Reform should thus focus on rich-world financial centres as well as Caribbean islands, and should distinguish between illegal activities (laundering and outright tax evasion) and legal ones (fancy accounting to avoid tax). The best weapon against illegal activities is transparency, which boils down to collecting more information and sharing it better. Thanks in large part to America’s FATCA, small offshore centres are handing over more data to their clients’ home countries—while America remains shamefully reluctant to share information with the Latin American countries whose citizens hold deposits in Miami. That must change. Everyone could do more to crack down on the use of nominee shareholders and directors to hide the provenance of money. And they should make sure that information about the true “beneficial” owners of companies is collected, kept up-to-date and made more readily available to investigators in cases of suspected wrongdoing. There are costs to openness, but they are outweighed by the benefits of shining light on the shady corners of finance.

Want more tax? Lower the tax rate

Transparency will also help curb the more aggressive forms of corporate tax avoidance. As Starbucks’s experience has shown, companies that shift money around to minimise their tax bills endanger their reputations. The more information consumers have about such dodges, the better.

Moral pressure is not the whole answer, though: consumers get bored with campaigns, and governments should not bash companies for trying to reduce their tax bills, if they do so legally. In the end, tax systems must be reformed. Governments need to make it harder for companies to use internal (“transfer”) pricing to avoid tax. Companies should be made to book activity where it actually takes place. Several federal economies, including America, already prevent companies from exploiting the differences between states’ rules. An international agreement along those lines is needed.

Governments also need to lower corporate tax rates. Tapping companies is inefficient: firms pass the burden on to others. Better to tax directly those who ultimately pay—whether owners of capital, workers or consumers. Nor do corporate taxes raise much money: barely more than 2% of GDP (8.5% of tax revenue) in America and 2.7% in Britain. Abolishing corporate tax would create its own problems, as it would encourage rich people to turn themselves into companies. But a lower rate on a broader base, combined with vigilance by the tax authorities, would be more efficient and would probably raise more revenue: America, whose companies face one of the rich world’s highest corporate-tax rates on their worldwide income, also has some of the most energetic tax-avoiders.

These reforms would not be easy. Governments that try to lower corporate tax rates will be accused of caving in to blackmailing capitalists. Financial centres and incorporation hubs, from the City of London to Delaware, will fight any attempt to tighten their rules. But if politicians really want to tax the missing $20 trillion, that’s where they should start.

Financial Crisis Cost Tops $22 Trillion, GAO Says

The 2008 financial crisis cost the U.S. economy more than $22 trillion, a study by the Government Accountability Office published Thursday said. The financial reform law that aims to prevent another crisis, by contrast, will cost a fraction of that.
"The 2007-2009 financial crisis, like past financial crises, was associated with not only a steep decline in output but also the most severe economic downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s," the GAO wrote in the report. The agency said the financial crisis toll on economic output may be as much as $13 trillion -- an entire year's gross domestic product. The office said paper wealth lost by U.S. homeowners totalled $9.1 billion. Additionally, the GAO noted, economic losses associated with increased mortgage foreclosures and higher unemployment since 2008 need to be considered as additional costs.
The report, five years after the collapse of mortgage-focused hedge funds in late-2007 set off a yearlong banking panic and a deep recession, was published as part of a cost-benefit analysis of the Dodd-Frank financial reform law of 2010. The GAO tried to determine if the benefits of preventing a future economic meltdown exceeded the costs of implementing that law.
"If the cost of a future crisis is expected to be in the trillions of dollars, then the act likely would need to reduce the probability of a future financial crisis by only a small percent for its expected benefit to equal the act’s expected cost," the GAO concluded.
Federal agencies have spent some $1.1 billion in implementing the law, the report found. Financial companies, and therefore the wider economy, will shoulder some costs, although the GAO noted "no comprehensive data are readily available on the costs that the financial services industry is incurring to comply with the Dodd-Frank Act."
It's unclear whether the report will mollify critics of the Dodd-Frank law.
Sen. Mike Crapo of Idaho, the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, said he was "concerned that the regulators do not understand the cumulative effect of the hundreds of proposed rules."
"There is a bipartisan concern that some of the Dodd-Frank rules go too far and need to be fixed," Crapo said during a Banking Committee hearing Thursday on implementation of the law.
The GAO noted it was not the first to estimate costs of the financial crisis. Non-profit financial reform advocacy group Better Markets last year pegged the cost of the crisis at $12.8 trillion, but warned many economic costs were impossible to measure.
"The consequences of such losses to a society are indeterminable, but potentially very far-reaching and long-lasting," the Better Markets report stated.
Dennis Kelleher, CEO of Better Markets, on Thursday praised the GAO report, saying in a statement that while "Wall Street and its many allies baselessly complaining about the cost" of Dodd-Frank, "they never mention that it was Wall Street’s reckless investments and trading that caused the biggest financial collapse since the Great Crash of 1929 or the trillions of dollars in costs they inflicted on our country.
"That economic wreckage can still be seen from coast to coast in unemployment, foreclosed and underwater homes, lost retirements and educations and so much more,” Kelleher said.

Που ψηφίζω;
