The latest film from The Matrix creators the Wachowskis may not have lived up to expectations, but the duo are now back with a series for Netflix — and today we're getting our first look at the trailer...
Created by the Wachowskis along with writer J. Michael Straczynski, Sense8 is the story of eight different people across the globe who suddenly find themselves connected, able to tap into each other's minds, skills, and physical abilities. Darryl Hannah, Lost's Naveen Andrews, and Wachowski mainstay Joe Pantoliano all feature in the ensemble cast.
It's the kind of surreal headtrip concept that fits perfectly with movies like Cloud Atlas, while also following in the path of shows like Heroes. If there's been an overarching criticism of the Wachowskis since the first Matrix film, it's that they try to cram too much into their movies, resulting in films that feel more like piles of beautifully designed concepts rather than coherent stories.
The long arc of a television series could allow them to tap into all of the many story, character, and philosophical ideas they want to play with, while still having the elbow room to weave a narrative over the course of many episodes. With Sense8, they'll be working with 12 episodes, which will launch in one delicious, bingeable 4K set on June 5th.
