an app which saves the links that are posted in Facebook for reading it later...
This feature was shown to me this morning for an AllThingsD article with a iBook-bookmark-style icon which when touched(clicked), the exact article (not the Facebook post) is saved. The activity is also added in our Profile Activity but in my case the privacy option was set to ‘Only Me’ by default maybe since it’s a testing-feature.
And this ‘Save for Later’ also created a new option under ‘Apps’ named ‘Saved’ which has the list of ‘Saved Links‘ that displays the saved links with ‘Link Saved Time (eg: 8 hours ago), Thumbnail, Link Title, Website name, Meta Description and the privacy type’ and a simple left swipe on it brings two more new options in grids – Share and Remove, while the former is to share in our wall, the later is to remove the saved link.
It looks like almost one year back, Facebook tested the same feature for iOS in which a long press of the article allowed the users to save the article for later reading but now the UI is different with a new white-colored icon which is shown along with the article and when touched (clicked), the icon turns blue indicating that the article (link) is saved for later use. It also looks like there is no option for ‘Offline Reading’ as of now (since it’s in Mobile web) but maybe Facebook might include it.
But this ‘Save for Later’ seems to be in much early stage since the App even doesn’t have a proper logo in activity screen but has the same iBook-Bookmark-style icon in the sidebar.
Apparently, Facebook wants to get into Instapaper/Pocket’s business to allow its Billion-users around the web to save any article that they read for later use without leaving Facebook. Personally, this is a great feature for me if Facebook allows web publishers to embed this ‘Save for Later’ button which can ultimately make Facebook a perfect News-reading place and if this ‘Save for Later’ is launched officially across all platforms (Facebook Web and Mobile Apps), then it’s a killer-feature that can jeopardize Instapaper and Pocket.
