Currys Sells One PC Or TV Every Two Seconds
Currys owner DSG International sold a television or computer every two seconds on its way to a record-breaking Christmas in the UK.
Owner of Currys and PC World sees evidence of 'genuine cyclical recovery'
The group, which also owns PC World and Dixons in the UK, reported an 8% increase in electrical sales in the UK and Ireland in the 12 weeks to January 9.
DSGi said the success continued into the sales period, with its megastores taking more than £1m each in their first week.
Computer sales benefited from the launch of Windows 7, but the recession is still holding back business-to-business trade.
The group, which also performed well in Scandinavia and Italy, said it was on track to deliver £50m of savings this year as part of its four-year, £200m cost-reduction programme.
The figures come as the high street was generally buoyed by festive trading.
They also add momentum to the turnaround for DSGi, which struggled in the early stages of the recession as shoppers eschewed big-ticket purchases.
Group chief executive John Browett said Christmas and New Year sales had exceeded expectations, but sounded a note of caution for the current year.
"This is evidence of a genuine cyclical recovery but how sustainable it is remains to be seen.
"Looking forward, we expect 2010 to be tough across Europe and notably in the UK given the economic environment," he said.
